Renew Your SSL Certificate in the Control Panel

For existing customers, after you log in to your control panel you will see a list of existing SSL certificates. If one of those digital certificates is going to be expired within 30 days, it will show the option to renew beside it. Simply select that option and upload your new CSR, if needed. We'll handle the rest.

Can I renew my SSL certificate here if I didn't buy it from you?

Absolutely! Though the process will function a little more like a first time purchase than a traditional renewal. Simply select the security certificate you'd like and then notify us that you're performing a renewal. One of our customer experience representatives will walk you through the rest.

Can I renew my SSL certificate if I didn't buy from Comodo?

Yes, you sure can! Once again, the process will function more like a new purchase than a renewal, but we can walk you through it-no problem. We do have to caution you though, you will have to undergo validation if you're changing Certificate Authorities (CAs).

When can I renew my SSL certificate?

You can renew your SSL certificate 30 days before its expiration. That's why we say the maximum lifespan of a certificate is 27 months-you can carry over the time remaining on your old certificate. This is why we renew instead of simply replace, you would lose value otherwise. By renewing you get to add the time you have left – time you paid for – to the time you're purchasing with your new certificate.

Renewal FAQ

Do I have to install a new SSL certificate?

Yes. Your old SSL certificate has an expiration date hard-coded into it. You'll need to add a new one or else browsers will warn users when they visit your site and see it's expired. We recommend installing the new certificate before uninstalling the old one, lest you have a lapse in encryption.

Why do I have to renew my SSL certificate?

Two reasons: 1.) To keep your validation information up to date and accurate, and 2.) To keep your encryption up to date with the latest versions and ciphers. The latter is vital to your security.

Do I have to generate a new CSR?

There are a handful of servers that require you to generate a new CSR:

  • Windows Servers
  • Tomcat Servers
  • Java-based Servers

In addition, most applications like firewalls and load balancers require you to generate a new CSR, too. Finally, if any of your business information has changed since your last validation, you'll need to generate a new CSR.
