Why do I need to renew my SSL certificate?

SSL renewal keeps your encryption up to date, which makes everyone safer

SSL certificates have expiration dates hardcoded into them. When they expire, web browsers will warn their users about your website. The reason SSL certificates expire is to keep your encryption up to date. By requiring you to renew your SSL certificate every two years, you'll always have the latest TLS versions and ciphers.

Why can't I just update my SSL certificate?

SSL certificates have to be issued by trusted third party Certificate Authorities. This is why the browsers trust them. The validation information that these certificates contain needs to stay accurate and up to date. By requiring you to renew instead of simply updating, Comodo is able to ensure your validation information is still accurate.

What do I need to do to renew my SSL certificate?

It's a very fast, easy process. All you need to do is log in to your control panel and select the certificate you want to renew. Click the "Renewal" option and we'll take care of the rest.

When can I renew my SSL certificate?

You can renew your SSL certificate up to 30 days before its expiration date. This is to give you time to get your new certificate issued and installed, lest you have a lapse in encryption. You can carry over any remaining time to your new certificate.

Do I Need to Generate a new Certificate Signing Request?

It depends on what platform you're installing your certificate on. Most Windows, Tomcat and Java-based servers do require you to submit a new CSR. You can generate one easily using our FREE tool.
